Prism Series

Postby Jsalos on Thu Jul 22, 2010 7:37 am

I was looking for a relatively portable system, and for a time considered the Mobius 17c, and am currently waiting to see what the new mobius addition will look like, but in the meanwhile I'm curious about the prism series. They're unusual looking desktops to be sure, but I was stunned by the dimensions of it: each is only 14 inch by 10 inch by 10. Furthermore given that it provides more sheer power than the current mobius at a lower price, I was considering it as a portable desktop, which leads me to ask:
How Heavy is the Typical prism?
Is it a suitable option for a portable desktop for someone who travels quite a lot, or should I just wait for the new mobius to be released?

With a dual card configuration the Prism weighs a total of 22 pounds.

The Prism chassis is built almost completely with aluminum components that can remove heat up to 4 times faster than steal. The Prism is also geared up with 2 120mm intake fans in the front that are extremely silent and move a high volume of air from the outside of the case. There is also an 80mm exhaust fan at the rear of the chassis. Another cool feature is the HDD cage is open on the bottom that allows air movement through your drive bays.

I was also looking at the configuration specs, and am curious as to what advantages a 300GB 10K Western Digital VelociRaptor HD has over a regular hard drive of greater size? Why are they so much more expensive, yet apparently smaller?

I recently entered the world of velociraptors and ssd drives... I despise waiting for windows to load...

On my desktop i have 2 velociraptors in raid and my mobo makes the process slow and painful on startup, but in games it is fantastic!!!! My wife has a very similar setup as mine but just a normal 7200rpm hdd... she cringes when she shes me move through the wow landscape and instance load times. We joke that she can go get drinks and snacks while we wait on hers to load. Mine is that much faster in game.

On my Mobius 17c laptop i put in a Kingston 128gb ssd and lets just say I do NOT wait for windows to load at all. Wow is also super fast.... Recently my wife has been playing WOW on my Mobius and loves it! We had to move my office around because my 15yr old daughter moved in with us!!! YAY!!!! So with 4 daughters under the same roof, my office is now a slightly rennovated Airstream. We have 3 computers in the Airstream and 1 is the Mobius and the lame duck is an old amd setup... My wife chose to keep her gaming rig in the house, so she uses the mobius when we are in the airstream.

i need to post some pictures.... I love the airstream! Its a lifelong dream to own one and its fun having a man cave! We call it the Silver Dragon! I previously did not see me as a prism purchaser, but who knows that tiny little box might just look very sexy in here... if only John could make it look like an Aitrstream... I'm surprised keith does not have a silver one shaped like the USS Enterprise... or maybe he does already.

I originally was going to travel(car) with a lan box to hotels, but am so glad i got my Mobius for travel. it's heavy but I do not fly much.
good luck, tecno/michael
